I intended to put together some fetching quotes from the Essay Contest, but between back and forths with writers and reading submissions time is tight so I’m doing something that was easier to put together for this weekly post.
I love bests. I think it’s deep in my programming since my lawyer dad, only sort of jokingly, would ask about the other two points when I’d come home from school with a 98. I’m implanted now with being supposed to get 100. That covers the attraction I have to bests -- things that are 100% wonderful.
These are weekly TV shows you may not even have heard of that devoted viewers wouldn’t miss.
CBS Sunday Morning, hosted by Jane Pauley, winner of Emmies for Outstanding Recorded News, features stories on the arts, music, nature, entertainment, history, science, sports, and Americana, and highlights unique human accomplishments and achievements.
Here’s a segment from their Valentine’s Day show. I usually get one good tear-up from each show and this story did it from this one:
When Calls the Heart has an online community of millions, called Hearties
NBC’s Sunday TODAY with Willie Geist: Journalist and humorist Willie Geist hosts an hour of sharp conversational coverage of the week's news, along with in-depth profiles of the people and personalities shaping America from politics to pop culture. There are recurring segments, including the Sunday Sit Down (with someone famous) and A Life Well Lived (an outstanding person you likely never heard of who died that week).
This is the Life Well Lived from this week’s show. (The Sunday Sit Down was with John Oliver.)
An Essay Contest Note: We need a name for the contest. How about the Save the World Essay Contest? Too much? If anyone has suggestions, please pop them into the Comments. And an enthusiastic welcome to people who submitted essays and heard about this Substack from the contest.
Dear subscribers -- A lot of you make direct replies to each post. Instead, if you comment here we can have the conversations I’d like to generate. And if you enjoyed this post please hit the heart so others can find it. First-timers will have to complete your Substack profile to be able to comment on the Substack platform!
For the contest name, maybe just a little change to the How We Saved The World essay contest?
Essay contest title suggestion for you: "Manifest Change Essay Contest", because I feel like putting down the ideas in words is the first step in manifesting those ideas into the change we want to see.
