With Mary Tyler Moore’s special airing tonight, here’s a window into my life #1 when I was a working actress. This is an episode of The Dick van Dyke Show where I’m Mary’s best friend from college and my visit is giving Millie, her next-door neighbor and current best friend, a funny hard time.
I’m featured in a follow up show: Why do we still love The Dick Van Dyke Show? Celebrate the 60th anniversary of our favorite sitcom! It’s cued up to my part. Rewind to see the whole wonderful tribute.
David van Deusen, who produced that show and maintains a wonderful Facebook page for all things about The Dick van Dyke Show mailed me this little thank-you to sign my name to and email back to him:
All I ever wanted to be was an actress. I was a drama major in college, but it was before women’s lib and when I married my college sweetheart and we had children he wasn’t so keen on my having a big career when a woman’s place was at home. So, mostly I did commercials (a funky reel of a bunch of them) that only took me away from home for a day or two, and one-shots mostly on comedy shows.
After I wasn’t married anymore and got deeply into the Human Potential Movement, I stopped acting and painting (I had a one-woman show for my post-impressionist works) and looked for how I could help wake the world up to what I was waking up to. Life #2 is ongoing!
